By the irradiation, the Curie temperature of the soecimens increases, which is correlated with the electronic stopping power. This phenomenon can be explained as due to the lattice expansion and/or the local increase in Ni concentration.

Experimental results are analyzed by using a model which describes the production and selective radiation annealing of defects. For high-energy (100MeV) heavy ion irradiations, radiation annealing process due to electronic excitation is found mainly at the initial stage of irradiation. From the defect accumulation curve and defect recovery spectra, the effective temperature corresponding to the lattice agitation induced by electronic excitation is estimated.

Using a newly developed rotatable time-of-flight mass spectrometer(R-TOF-MS) and polarized synchrotron radiation, we have investigated orientation effect on fragmentation and desorption pathways occurring at the top-most layers of molecular solids. Reported will be polarization-angle dependencies of TOF mass spectra, high-resolution electron- and ion-NEXAFS in condensed formic acid, formamide and benzene. For condensed formamide(HCOND), marked orientation effect was observed for the enhanced H-yields following C1s * resonance. Direct photodissociation and charge-neutralization play an important role in the effect. For some fragment species, however, the bond scission showed no polarization dependence when dissociation sites were far from core-excited atoms. This is the case for N-D scission and D-desorption following C1s excitation, suggesting that indirect process governs, where secondary electrons would induce the fragmentation.

In the high ion-velocity region, the change in lattice parameter per unit fluence varies as the 4th power of the electronic stopping power. However, in the low-velocity region, the deviation from the 4th power dependence is observed. The results are analyzed by using the primary ionization rate, and it is found that the results support that the Coulomb explosion triggers the atomic displacements.

It was found that electronic transitions from the C1s or the N1s to the *(C-H) and/or (N-H) enhanced ion yield of H+ from the C-H and/or N-H functional group. This selective dissociation indicates that the corresponding unoccupied molecular orbital has an antibonding character of the C-H and/or N-H. To investigate the molecular orientation of condensed formamide, incidence-angle-dependent TEY-NEXAFS spectra were measured. The CNO plane of the adsorbed formamide molecule is determined to be tilted away from the surface by an averaged angle of about 42 degrees.

NaCl-type structured nitrides, such as ZrN and TiN, have potential applications to inert matrix fuels for the transmutation of minor actinides (MA) in accelerator-driven systems (ADS), because of their excellent thermal properties. Understanding of radiation damage with fission fragments is one of the essentials to clarify the microstructural stability of those materials under high-density electronic excitation induced by swift heavy ions. However, very little information about such damage in nitride fuels is available. The present study aims to obtain the knowledge of high-density electronic excitation damage in nitride fuels. XRD analysis has shown that the lattice parameter and the lattice strain of the irradiated ZrN and DyZrN increase with increasing ion fluence.
